At the end of the New Pope finale, it appears that Lenny has died and gone back to heaven, presented as a beautiful, dreamlike beach.
In fact, however, The Young Pope is a feat of incredible production trickery — despite the meticulous attention to detail, not one scene was actually filmed in or around Vatican City. Exterior shots were a little easier to construct, and were filmed in several villas and public gardens around Rome.
The Young Pope | Netflix.
For its second season, The Young Pope has become The New Pope, with John Malkovich's John Brannox becoming Pope John Paul III after Pope Pius XII, aka Lenny Belardo (Jude Law) went into a coma in the season finale. This happened after Lenny collapsed in that finale.
You will at least need to read or watch a thorough re-cap of The Young Pope to follow The New Pope. Definitely watch Young Pope first, New Pope is the second season.
This week, “The New Pope” returns on HBO, and “Sex Education” season 2 drops on Netflix. The Paolo Sorrentino-created series returns for season 2, picking up where season 1 left off with Jude Law's Lenny Belardo, known as Pope Pius XIII, in a coma.
Like The Young Pope before it, The New Pope is not based on a true story. Instead, director Paolo Sorrentino takes liberties with this church-focused story that combines a little fact with fiction. Even the new pope's name is a callback.
Like Westworld, HBO's latest creative venture, The Young Pope is not based on a true story. Jude Law plays Lenny Belardo, also known as Pius XIII, the first American Pope in history — and the youngest. He is calculating, spiritual, and devious.
This time, it's for HBO's latest series The New Pope, a follow-up to the aforementioned show, which debuted in 2017 and starred Law and Diane Keaton. The New Pope was announced shortly after the success of the original, and now a brand new image features one very famous face — John Malkovich.
Don't be alarmed. Yes, those keeping up with “The New Pope” are now looking at Lenny Belardo, the so-called young pope played by Jude Law, alive and in the flesh. After six episodes of spiritual apparitions and twitching fingers, Lenny finally woke from his 12-month coma.

The Young Pope's Silvio Orlando on His Mischievous Role and Fake Moles. Of all of the actors on HBO's new love-it-or-hate-it religious drama The Young Pope, perhaps none have been met with such unexpected fanfare as seasoned Italian actor Silvio Orlando.
Filming locations included a refugee camp in Rome, a full-size reproduction of the Sistine Chapel interior created at the Cinecittà studios in Rome, an area outside Castel Gandolfo (the pope's summer palace), various locations in Rome as stand-ins for scenes at the Vatican, and poor areas of Buenos Aires.

The current Pope is from South America; there hasn't been a Pope from the United States yet. Originally Answered: Was there any pope from America? Nope. The vast majority were from Italy, and the incumbent, Francis, is the first Pope not from Europe (though he is of Italian extraction).
United States: Washington, D.C. Pope Francis visited North America—Cuba and the United States—from 19 to 27 September 2015.
A millipede is seen in a jar on Adam's desk in a flashback this week; another indication God is “with” him as opposed to his brother. During what was, most likely, a dream/vision of sorts, we see a millipede crawl out of the Pope's mysterious box this week.
