Pre-May 2019 Huawei and Honor phones will continue to get security updates and current devices that due to get Android 10 will still get it. Huawei laptops will get all the Windows updates in the traditional manner. But newly released Huawei phones can't use Google services and this is set to be a long-term issue.
The controversy surrounding Huawei's security isn't relevant to buying one of their smartphones, and it's worth reiterating that no evidence has been released to show that using a smartphone manufactured by Huawei is any less secure than using one made by their Android rivals.
While new Huawei phones and Honor phones don't have Google apps installed, with the Huawei Mate 30 Pro and Honor 9X Pro both launching without them, it seems a new hack has been discovered which gets you the Google Play Store back.
Rather than ditching Android completely, Huawei continues to use the open source core Android operating system on its devices.
Due to the company's ongoing difficulties with the US government, Huawei phones do not use Google services. That means no Google Play Store for apps and no support for services such as Gmail, YouTube, Maps or the Chrome browser.
Google is barred from doing business with Huawei, meaning the Chinese giant is unable to obtain an Android license. And that means that until further notice, any new Huawei phone has to ship without Google apps and services. Heck, you don't even have to be an Android user.
How to update the software on your Huawei phone
- Open the Settings app on your phone.
- Tap System.
- Tap Software update.

Download and Install Google Play Store on any Huawei and Honor device
- Go to the Huawei/Honor app drawer.
- Locate the Settings app and tap on it.
- Next, you need to select “Advanced Settings”.
- Tap on “Security” and then tap on “Enable Installation from Unknown Sources”.
