A slang term referring to the referees. The name is derived from the fact that the referee jerseys are black and white stripes.
Teams are NOT PERMITTED TO WEAR BLACK KITS. Should there be a clash of colours between the match official(s) and a team that is not able to be resolved by the match officials' alternative coloured shirt, the match official(s) MUST change and revert to a black shirt and NOT the teams.
The head linesman (H or HL), or down judge (DJ) in the NFL and CFL, stands at one end of the line of scrimmage (usually the side opposite the press box, always with the chain crew), looking for possible offsides, encroachment and other fouls before the snap.

Based on Indeed Salaries data, the average salary for a referee is $13.62 per hour, which is approximately $27,000 a year. At an adult and children's indoor soccer league such as Arena Sports, a referee is paid an average of $15.79 per hour `according to Indeed Salaries data.
According to Money.com, an NFL officials average salary rose to about $201,000 in 2019, which likely has grown ever so slightly over the past year-plus. Officials also receive a defined-401(k) plan from the NFL with an annual deposit of $18,000 and partial-matching from the league.
On April 8, 2015, Thomas was hired as the first full-time female official in NFL history, and for the 2020 NFL season, she was on the officiating crew headed by referee Shawn Hochuli. In February 2021, she became the first woman to officiate in a Super Bowl.
Everybody in that organization's front office also gets a Super Bowl ring. Seeing as refs are given the honor of reffing the Super Bowl based on their performance during the regular season, it's a nice way to recognize a special year fom them.

In addition to relaying the calls to the teams and fans, a ref is also the crew chief, or leader, of the seven-man officiating team that also includes an umpire, a field judge, a back judge, a line judge, a side judge, and a head linesman.
