You are eligible to work in the UK, and therefore don't need to obtain a work permit, if any of the following apply: You are a British citizen. You are an European Economic Area (EEA) citizen – see list below. You are a Swiss national.

You probably won't need all of these, but you should aim to have:
- Your passport.
- Your National Insurance card.
- Your driving license.
- Proof of your address (eg. electricity bill)
- Your UK visa (if appropriate)
- P45.
You should also bring as many as possible of the following original documents: Birth Certificate; EU or UK Passport; UK Driving Licence; a document stating your name and National Insurance Number. (This could be a P45, P60, National Insurance card, or a letter from a Government agency).
You can currently only apply for a National Insurance number in England, Scotland and Wales if you have entered the UK on a visa. You can start work without a National Insurance number if you can prove you can work in the UK. You can also still apply for benefits or a student loan.
A certificate of naturalization as British Citizen together with an official document issued by a previous employer or Government Agency with the person's name and National Insurance number. This could be a P45, P46, National Insurance card, or a letter from a Government agency such as the DWP, Job Centre Plus or HMRC.
Other than personal testimony or statements, forms of evidence may include original birth certificates and marriage certificates, residence permits, travel warrants, parish records and other documents that prove (where material), date of birth, place of birth, parentage, legitimacy, identity, and so on.
P45 or P60. Bank statements showing payments by direct debit for class-2 National Insurance contributions, or benefit payments received showing your NINo on the statement, for example, Incapacity Benefit or State Pension.
If a new employee does not provide an NI number, or provides an invalid NI number, you can assign a temporary number in the software until you can obtain the correct number from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

In the United Kingdom all employers are required by law to check their employees have the right to work in the UK. The British government website states that "You must check that a job applicant is allowed to work for you in the UK before you employ them."
Recent bank or credit union statement. Up-to-date credit card statement. Household utility bill (electricity, gas, water, landline, etc.)
If you are applying for a new job, under official legislation your new potential employer will require you to show your Birth Certificate and/or passport before they will be able to hire you. It is not necessary to produce your original Birth Certificate.
