The Comrades Marathon, the world's biggest ultramarathon, will not go ahead this year because of the Covid pandemic. The 95th running of the iconic 90-mile race between the South African cities of Pietermaritzburg and Durban was due to take place on June 13.

Since the Russian Revolution, popular culture in the Western world has often associated it with communism. However, the term comrade is improperly attributed to Russian speakers, since Russians do not say comrade, but rather tovarisch (товаÌрищ).
This year, there are 17,268 men and 4,357 women tackling the 2019 Comrades Marathon. This brings the total number of runners to 21,625.

The South African soldiers who gave their lives in World War I gave veteran Vic Clapham the idea to stage a running race in their honour.
Athletes currently have 12 hours to complete the course, extended from 11 hours in 2003 (including a special 12 hour allowance in the year 2000). The original Comrades cut-off time from 1921 to 1927 was also 12 hours, reduced to 11 hours in 1928.
Qualifying for the 2020 Comrades Marathon is applicable as of 24 August 2019 till 4 May 2020. The qualifying criteria for next year's Comrades Marathon will be to complete a standard 42.2km marathon in under 4 hours and 50 minutes, or a 56km ultra-marathon in under 6 hours and 45 minutes.â€
Besides narrowly missing the South African marathon record last year, Steyn made history when she became the first woman to finish the Comrades up run (from Durban to Pietermaritzburg) in under six hours.

When you win a marathon, of course you get money. You get some fame, you get shoe deals (if the race is big), some other endorsement contracts, etc. That is most big marathons.
In 2019, the winners of the men's and women's elite races were awarded $55,000, while second place received $30,000. Third place got $22,500. Additional prizes included a share of $100,000 for anyone in the men's race who ran a sub-2:05:00 time, and the same amount would be given to any woman who ran sub-2:18:00.
