New Amsterdam is based on a true story, a real doctor, and a real New York hospital. He's fresh to his role as the chief medical director of New Amsterdam Hospital, which, according to Deadline, is inspired by New York's Bellevue Hospital — the oldest public hospital in America.
Following its capture, New Amsterdam's name was changed to New York, in honor of the Duke of York, who organized the mission. The colony of New Netherland was established by the Dutch West India Company in 1624 and grew to encompass all of present-day New York City and parts of Long Island, Connecticut, and New Jersey.
New Amsterdam star Freema Agyeman has been just as in the dark as fans are about the fate of her character Dr. Helen Sharpe.
Early on, however, he learns that he has cancer, and the diagnosis plays a significant part in the drama going forward. "The good news is, it's based on [former real-life medical director Eric Manheimer] and his life. He beat this thing," Eggold explains while speaking with Digital Spy.

He is bilingual and can speak Spanish fluently. He and his sister Luna were born at New Amsterdam Medical Center. Following a hopsital-acquired infection, Luna died in the hospital at age 8.
Did they finally end up kissing? No, unfortunately. Dr Helen Sharpe and Dr Max Goodwin got very close to passionately locking lips and giving into their pretty obvious feelings and fans just cannot keep calm. "The way Max looked like he just wanted to GRAB HER AND KISS HER," said a fan.
Max is a widow, has cancer, a singer father and is running a hospital. This is just cruel. he's fighting cancer, raising a newborn after the death of his wife, head of the ER, and survived a tragic car accident.
Sharpe die in that accident? However in What the Heart Wants, Sharpe is arrested for taking one of her patients to a safe-injection site. Despite being bailed-out by Dr. Castro, Karen Brantley and the Board of Directors at New Amsterdam Medical Center find out about the arrest.And that brings us back to Georgia, who at the end of the day again declared, “Your turn,” to which Max replied, “It's always my turn.” Then a flashback revealed that Georgia actually died on the operating table, so Max has been comforting his crying daughter all by himself in the present.
