Gretzky became executive director for the Canadian national men's hockey team during the 2002 Winter Olympics, in which the team won a gold medal. In 2000, he became part-owner of the Phoenix Coyotes, and following the 2004–05 NHL lock-out, he became the team's head coach.
Wayne Gretzky is the GOAT athlete in the history of team sports.
His legend was the thing. He was the fastest player of his time and utterly thrilling to watch but beyond that, he was a symbol of something so grander than tenths of a second. He was a symbol of all those great baseball players that America never saw because of blindness and intolerance.
Crosby combines career achievement, having won almost every trophy possible, and a vast skillset, besting Gretzky in numerous areas even without the video game scoring numbers. Sid may not take the “Great One” title, but he deserves to be considered the GOAT.
7 ways anyone can become an athlete
- Find a sport you can be passionate about. Gym-going is a healthy habit, to be sure, but you won't find many people devoting their lives to keeping up in step class.
- Define yourself as a member of the community.
- Make your sport a priority.
- Test yourself.
- Cross-train.
- Eat right.
- Push harder.
Short answer is Gretzky was going to be an unrestricted free agent in 1989 and the Oilers risked losing him in 1989 for nothing, versus the $15M, players, and draft picks they received in 1988. At one time, Gretzky was under a personal services contract with the owner, Peter Pocklington of the Edmonton Oilers.
