Install Carpet Without Tack Strips
Another alternative is to carpet each stair individually where the foot lands. Grab a sharp utility knife and a measuring tape and get to work. Measure the width of the stair and length. Use the patch as a template to cut around the damage, then lift the piece out. Cut one or two strips of hot-melt tape as needed and slip them under the carpet, splitting the difference between the hole and the existing carpet. Place the patch into the hole, and use the iron to activate the glue.
