There are three main types of stress. These are acute, episodic acute, and chronic stress. We explore each type of stress below.
The word present, for example is a two-syllable word. If we stress the first syllable, it is a noun (
gift) or an adjective (opposite of absent). But if we stress the second syllable, it becomes a verb (to offer).

Primary stress is marked in IPA by putting a raised vertical line [ˈ] at the beginning of the syllable. secondary stress: syllables which aren't completely unstressed, but aren't as loud as the primary stress. Secondary stress is marked with a lowered vertical line [ˌ] at the beginning of the syllable.

For example, in a word like “organization”, there is primary stress on the fourth syllable, and a secondary stress on the first syllable: or-guh-nuh-ZEI-sh'n. The other 3 syllables are weak.
To make the confusion complete, the stress in the word photographic, pronounced /ˌf??t?ˈgræf?k/ (f?u-t?-græf-ik) (UK), /ˌfo?t?ˈgræf?k/ (foh-t?-græf-ik) (US), is on the third syllable.

So, for example in the word 'ahead', 'HEAD' is the stressed syllable and the 'a' at the beginning is un-stressed - 'a. HEAD'. In 'amended', 'MEN' is the stressed syllable the 'a' and the 'ded' at the end are unstressed - 'a. MEN.
Basic Rules for Accented Syllables
- Accents are usually placed on the root of a word, not the prefix or suffix.
- Accents are usually placed on the first syllable if the root is 2 syllables or the word is made of 2 roots.
- Accents are usually placed on one of the first 2 syllables in a 3 syllable word.
A stressed syllable combines five features:
- It is l-o-n-g-e-r - com p-u-ter.
- It is LOUDER - comPUTer.
- It has a change in pitch from the syllables coming before and afterwards.
- It is said more clearly -The vowel sound is purer.
- It uses larger facial movements - Look in the mirror when you say the word.
Stressed vowel sounds are longer, louder, and/or higher in pitch than vowel sounds without stress. You can use just one of these features, or any combination of these features at the same time. Overall, stressed sounds are “stronger” than unstressed sounds.

Most three syllable words (nouns, adjectives or verbs) are stressed on the first syllable. Three syllable words terminating with the “-er”, “-or”, “-ly” or “-y” are generally stressed on the first syllable.
With verbs of two syllables, if the second syllable of the verb contains a long vowel or a diphthong, or if it ends with more than one consonant, the second syllable is stressed. With verbs of two syllables, if the final syllable contains a short vowel and one (or no) final consonant, the first syllable is stressed.
