Kochi, India became Norfolk's 8th Sister City in September 2010. Known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea, Kochi (formerly called Cochin) is one of the principal seaports of India and the commercial hub of the tropical state of Kerala in southwest India.
Although the city's official name is Kozhikode, in English it is sometimes known by its anglicised version, Calicut. The word calico, a fine variety of hand-woven cotton cloth that was exported from the port of Kozhikode, is thought to have been derived from Calicut.
Goa on India's western coast was freed from Portuguese rule on 19 December 1961, more than four centuries after it was colonised. But Goa remained a Portuguese colony until 1961, straining relations between India and Portugal as the former's support for the anti-colonial movement in Goa grew.
