'Bombay' is an anglicized version of the Portuguese name used by the British when they took control of the city in the 17th century. The city's official name change, to Mumbai from Bombay happened when regional political party Shiv Sena came into power in 1995.
On the 1st of January 2001, the West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya announced that the State Capital 'Calcutta' has been officially renamed 'Kolkata'. Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta said that all official communications would now carry the new name - with effect from January 1, 2001.

The old name is Bombay. It was changed by Shiv-sena in 1995 to Mumbai. Bombay had its name (as Bombaim) from the Portuguese times even before it was handed over to the British. Old Portuguese phrase bom baim, means "good little bay", and Bombaim is still commonly used in Portuguese.
On 11 May 1661, the marriage treaty of Charles II of England and Catherine of Braganza, daughter of King John IV of Portugal, placed Bombay in the possession of the British Empire, as part of Catherine's dowry to Charles.
The city's former name, Calcutta, is an Anglicized version of the Bengali name Kalikata. According to some, Kalikata is derived from the Bengali word Kalikshetra, meaning “Ground of (the goddess) Kali.” Some say the city's name derives from the location of its original settlement on the bank of a canal (khal).

At first there were just seven islands separated by swamps: the land was dangerous and unhealthy. In 1534, the Portuguese captured the islands and established a trading centre (or 'factory') there. The Portuguese called the place Bom Bahia, meaning 'the good bay', which the English pronounced Bombay.Mumbai has the highest number of high net worth individuals (HNWIs), those with assets over $1 million, in the country. It's where India's richest man, Mukesh Ambani, lives. It is “the financial centre of India. “Major industries in the city include financial services, real estate, and media.”
And so it was , that the whole of Colonial India started using the name “Bombay”. It is only the native speakers who used Mumbai. Upon the reintroduction of “Mumbai”, some people still use Bombay to address it. Some for style and some out of habit.
The Bombay Company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on September 20, 2007. The company was sold to Gordon Brothers and Hilco, two liquidation companies who sold off the remaining inventory. Bombay Canada is now owned by Fluid Brands Inc.
In 2001 the government of West Bengal decided to officially change its capital city's name to Kolkata to reflect its original Bengali pronunciation. It didn't really affect us much. But Calcutta became Kolkata with minimal fuss. And for many of its residents it remained both, just as it had always been.
This station was initially called as “shiv” in Marathi. But, the Britishers had a difficulty in pronouncing the name so they named it as “Sion” in English. The meaning of the name is boundary or limit and due to this in 17th century the village formed a large boundary between Mumbai and Salsette Island.
In the early years after Indian independence, many name changes were effected in northern India for English spellings of Hindi place names that had simply been romanised inconsistently by the British administration – such as the British spelling "Jubbulpore," renamed "Jabalpur" (??????) among the first changes in 1947.

Bombay was the name given to the port city by the Britishers(East India Company). But in 1995 Shiv Sena won the elections in Maharashtra and changed the name to Mumbai after the Hindu Goddess Mumba Devi - The city's patron deity.
In 1995 Bombay officially became Mumbai. To mark the occasion Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray installed a marble plaque with the name on the Gateway of India - a famous sandstone arch.
NEW DELHI: Mumbai has been ranked as the 45th safest city on the Safe Cities Index (SCI), while Delhi stood at the 52nd position, a report by Economist Intelligence Unit said on Thursday.

Mumbai (Bombay) History. Mumbai owes its colourful present to its equally interesting past. Originally a group of seven islands inhabited by Koli fishermen, the area was surrendered to Portugal in 1534, who called it 'Bom Bahia' meaning 'the good bay'.
The British started reclamation work in 1938 and by 1845, all the seven islands had been connected to form a single island called Old Bombay. In fact the whole city is man-made, i.e., seven islands made into one land mass.
The movie shows a world in 2050, after a time machine catapults a young rogue to find his long lost love. Complete with freakish pink teddy bear robots, 200-story buildings, sassy Bollywood dance numbers with android backing, and of course, fantastic green haircuts, Mumbai looks like a pretty fun place to be in 2050.
