The large Pencil Factory building at 47-61 Greenpoint is well known and takes up most of the north side of the Greenpoint block between Franklin and West Street.

The Eberhard Faber Pencil Company announced its plans to move to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in 1955. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the Eberhard Faber Pencil Factory historic district on October 30, 2007.
Stanleyville is known as "the pencil capital of the world" and received a brief burst of publicity after the release of the 2012 film The Odd Life of Timothy Green, which was set in Stanleyville (though not exclusively filmed there) and in which pencils play a prominent role.
And most of it is done right here in the hills of central Tennessee, as it has been for decades. Total sales of all types of pencils, from the Yellow No. 2s to eyebrow markers, reached 2.8 billion last year, up from 1.8 billion in 1983.
