USGS Lava Hazard Zone definitions
The lava flow hazard zones are based on location of eruptive vents, past lava coverage, and topography. Zone 3 - Areas less hazardous than zone 2 because of greater distance from recently active vents and (or) because of topography.Zone 1 represents the greatest hazard risk, but Waikoloa stands in a relatively less hazardous zone 3 due to the greater distances from the summit and rift zones of Mauna Loa. Along with volcanic eruptions and lava flows, the region is also affected by earthquakes.
The part of Hilo that lies south of the Wailuku River is included in Zone 3 of Mauna Loa. Two areas on Mauna Loa are classed as Zone 6 because they are currently protected from lava flows by the local topography. One of these is the Naalehu area; the other is the slope southeast of the present summit caldera.
Lava flow from a Hawaii volcano has weakened significantly. (CNN) After three devastating months of volcanic activity, the most active lava flow on Hawaii's Big Island has come to a near halt, according to the US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
Currently, there are NO ACTIVE flows inside or outside of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. See our 'What's Happening Now' section below for more information. Before 2018, you could just as easily have witnessed lava flows chewing on Chain of Craters Road as you could view a steam plume from afar.
Hawaiian Beaches and Hawaiian Shores, which have more than 3,000 lots, are also in zone 2. Other zone 2 subdivisions in the area include Puna Beach Palisades with about 150 lots; Waawaa with nearly 180 lots; and Kalapana Seaview Estates with nearly 1,000 lots.
PAHOA, Hawaii – Last summer's lava flows from Mount Kilauea destroyed an estimated 700 buildings, covered roads and reshaped the Big Island's coastline. For many residents, the property loss has been compounded by their inability to return home because roads remain covered or blocked by the lava flow.
Looking at the Lava Zone Map:
- The town of Hilo is Lava Zone 3.
- Kailua Kona is Lava Zone 4.
- The Kohala Coast resorts are lava zones 3 and 8.
- Waimea and the Hamakua Coast are lava zone 8.
- North Kohala is lava zone 9.
Kilauea is Hawaii's most active volcano and parts of it have been continuously erupting since January 3, 1983. But the last major volcanic eruption at Kilauea was in 2014 and lasted for several months.

Each island is made up of at least one primary volcano, although many islands are composites of more than one. The Big Island, for instance, is constructed of 5 major volcanoes: Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, Hualalai and Kohala. Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on Earth.
Activity Summary: Kīlauea Volcano is not erupting. Monitoring data for January show variable rates of seismicity and ground deformation, low rates of sulfur dioxide emissions, and only minor geologic changes since the end of eruptive activity in September 2018. Activity Summary: Mauna Loa Volcano is not erupting.
The Big Island has three active volcanoes Mauna Loa, Kilauea, and Hualalai. Mauna Kea is considered dormant whereas Kohala is extinct. Oahu, Kauai, Lanai, and Molokai do not have lava zones.
Mauna Kea is actually a volcano. It last erupted over 4,600 years ago. It is dormant right now, but Mauna Kea is likely to erupt again one day.
They are considered high risk areas due to volcanic activity. An insurance expert says homeowners in these areas pay a premium to get coverage for lava damage. A typical home insurance policy is about $500 to $600 a year. With lava coverage, it can cost more than $3,000 a year.
There are nine zones in all—Lava Zone 1 through 9—and each zone has a particular meaning for the potential hazard.
Based on FBI crime data, Mountain View is not one of the safest communities in America. Relative to Hawaii, Mountain View has a crime rate that is higher than 85% of the state's cities and towns of all sizes.
As lava from the Kilauea volcano has devoured at least 26 homes in Hawaii, residents in at-risk zones are wondering if they're covered for the damage. While you can get insurance for most natural disasters, including floods and earthquakes, specific insurance for volcanic or lava damage is exceptionally rare.
