Charleston was badly damaged by the Union Army during the Civil War. The Union soldiers burnt much of Charleston. Much of what wasn't destroyed during the war fell after the 1865 earthquake. Despite witnessing so much destruction, Charleston has been able to restore many of its historic structures.

After a siege that began on April 2, 1780, Americans suffer their worst defeat of the revolution on May 12, 1780, with the unconditional surrender of Major General Benjamin Lincoln to British Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton and his army of 10,000 at Charleston, South Carolina.

In 1680, Charles Town moved to its present day location (now referred to as Downtown Charleston) and adopted its modern name in 1783. For this reason, Charleston earned the nickname of "Holy City" as it was known for its tolerance for all religions and it numerous historic churches.
Charleston has a bit more shopping, arts and nightlife than Savannah but its really apples and oranges. You can't go too wrong with either. As far as ghost tours go, we've done both in each city and find Savannah's better or just as good as Charleston's. Savannah has more ghost tours altogether.

Actually, my trip to Charleston overall was worth it. I found it to be a very beautiful city, full of colorful, graceful homes and an atmosphere of true southern charm. An interesting place" and then from there I either leave it alone or share why I find Charleston to be an "interesting place."
