In certain situations, MassHealth may pay for emergency treatment for a medical condition when a MassHealth member is out of state. If you are not enrolled in a health plan through MassHealth, but instead get premium assistance, your private health insurance may also pay for emergency care you get out of state.

WithTufts Health Unify, our Medicare-Medicaid One Care plan for people ages 21 – 64, we provide enrollees with access to One Care's comprehensive care delivery system.
Effective for dates of service on or after January 1, 2021, Tufts Health Direct will not require referrals for specialty care. Tufts Health RITogether does not require referrals for specialty care. However, PCPs are responsible for referring members to an in-network specialist, when appropriate.
Tufts Health Plan offers Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) coverage, which does not require you to select a primary care physician or obtain referrals. Both in-network and out-of-network coverage is offered.
MassHealth sometimes pays the premiums for other groups of people who have private insurance or Medicare. If MassHealth does this, you have what is called fee-for-service coverage. Most people who receive Commonhealth will have a MassHealth card, but also are not part of MassHealth's managed care program (PCC or HMO).

To start, HMO stands for Health Maintenance Organization, and the coverage restricts patients to a particular group of physicians called a network. PPO is short for Preferred Provider Organization and allows patients to choose any physician they wish, either inside or outside of their network.
CIC stands for Comprehensive Insurance Coverage. Our two indemnity plans, Basic and Medicare Extension, have the CIC option. When you have CIC, more services are covered at 100% (compared to 80% without CIC). However, the same services are covered whether you have CIC or not.
