- Hygiene items- pack only essentials or not at all.
- Stuff socks into shoes.
Our typical day-wear included thick socks, long-sleeved thermal top and underwear; jeans, shirt and fleece or jersey; an insulated, wind-resistant jacket; a beanie and scarf or buff; and, a pair of good mittens. The perfect combo is thin gloves inside mittens.

What to Wear in Copenhagen in Winter
- Hats. A very warm hat is a must.
- Mittens. Gloves are great for taking photos or using your hands in general, but mittens are what really keeps your hands warm.
- Scarf. I loved scarves.
- Wool Socks. Wool is simply a must in a place this cold.

The Northern Lights are visible on roughly 200 nights a year – or every other clear night – in Finnish Lapland. The more traditional ways to go Aurora spotting are snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or snowmobile and sled dog touring.
Obviously you can't necessarily cram all of this into a day-trip, when much of your time will be spent travelling to and from Lapland, you need to go for at least three or four days, but if you can afford the time and the not inconsiderable expense, I'd say it's totally worth it.

Thermal underwear functions as a second skin – creating an insulating layer between your body and the fabric. For warm conditions – your underwear needs to be loose. In cold weather, snug-fitting underwear traps the heat generated by your body and boosts comfort.
Footwear: Snow boots are best. But perhaps a bit overkill if you only visit Lapland once or twice per year. Hiking or walking boots are fine (like this). Ideally a little larger than your foot size so you can wear 2 thick wool socks and them still be comfortable.
Tap water is perfectly fine to drink anywhere in Finland and, in fact much better than bottled water, sold in shops. You can drink as much tap water as you can in Lapland, and you can even order tap water in the cafes and restaurants as well.

- Thin woolen or fleece gloves (ideal as a base layer under snowmobile gloves)

The Lapland region has a subarctic to continental climate characterized by mild summers and cold, snowy winters. In the summertime, temperatures are usually 10 - 15 °C (50 - 60 °F) and rainfall is moderate.
You will need to bring some of your own clothes as well, and the key to dressing for Lapland is to layer up. Some thermal underwear, some kind of long sleeve shirt or fleece is best and then a jacket are ideal underneath your thermal suit. The layers will trap the air and keep the cold out and the heat in.
