As of Gen VI, Aerodactyl was given a Mega Evolution that made it even more powerful, as well as giving it a beard made out of rock.

It's also the second best for attacking (38% as effective as the best attacking Snorlax). But unfortunately Steel Wing's effectiveness against ice and rock are both pretty much negated due to the fact that Aerodactyl is flying and weak against both of those. So you can't really use him for type advantages.
STABmons gives Aerodactyl access to a good Flying-type STAB attack in Brave Bird as well. Because Rock Head makes Aerodactyl immune to recoil damage, Brave Bird becomes a perfectly accurate, 120 Base Power STAB move with no drawbacks. There are a few options for the fourth moveslot.
Lance's Aerodactyl knows Rock Slide in the Generation II games, although Aerodactyl could not know this move until Generation III.
