Staging Groups
- Stage 0 means there's no cancer, only abnormal cells with the potential to become cancer.
- Stage I means the cancer is small and only in one area.
- Stage II and III mean the cancer is larger and has grown into nearby tissues or lymph nodes.
- Stage IV means the cancer has spread to other parts of your body.
The major types of cancer are carcinoma, sarcoma, melanoma, lymphoma, and leukemia. Carcinomas -- the most commonly diagnosed cancers -- originate in the skin, lungs, breasts, pancreas, and other organs and glands. Lymphomas are cancers of lymphocytes. Leukemia is cancer of the blood.
TNM stands for Tumour, Node, Metastasis. Your scans and tests give some information about the stage of your cancer.

Stage 3 cancer means the breast cancer has extended to beyond the immediate region of the tumor and may have invaded nearby lymph nodes and muscles, but has not spread to distant organs. Although this stage is considered to be advanced, there are a growing number of effective treatment options.
Number staging systems usually use the TNM system to divide cancers into stages. Most types of cancer have 4 stages, numbered from 1 to 4. Often doctors write the stage down in Roman numerals. So you may see stage 4 written down as stage IV.
Cancer starts with changes in one cell or a small group of cells. If any of these signals are faulty or missing, cells may start to grow and multiply too much and form a lump called a tumour. A primary tumour is where the cancer starts. Some types of cancer, called leukaemia, start from blood cells.
T2: The tumor is larger than 20 mm but not larger than 50 mm. T3: The tumor is larger than 50 mm. T4: The tumor falls into 1 of the following groups: T4a means the tumor has grown into the chest wall. T4b is when the tumor has grown into the skin.
Because stage 3 breast cancer has spread outside the breast, it's harder to treat than early stage breast cancer. With aggressive treatment, stage 3 breast cancer is curable, but the risk that the cancer will grow back after treatment is high.
In the TNM system, each cancer is assigned a letter or number to describe the tumor, node, and metastases. T stands for the original (primary) tumor. TX means the tumor can't be measured. T0 means there is no evidence of a primary tumor (it cannot be found).
Stage IV. Stage IV describes invasive breast cancer that has spread beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to other organs of the body, such as the lungs, distant lymph nodes, skin, bones, liver, or brain.
While treatable, metastatic breast cancer (MBC) cannot be cured. The five-year survival rate for stage 4 breast cancer is 22 percent; median survival is three years. As with primary breast cancer, treatment for stage 4 breast cancer, such as chemotherapy or radiation, can often be harsh and unforgiving.

The chance that surgery will cause cancer to spread to other parts of the body is extremely low. Following standard procedures, surgeons use special methods and take many steps to prevent cancer cells from spreading during biopsies or surgery to remove tumors.
