Should my Mickey Thompson slicks be balanced? Yes. We suggest static or Bubble balancing. Dynamic or Spin balancing, a bias ply slick will work best only if the slick does not deform.
Real-world research and development give Mickey Thompson slicks the competitive edge. The ET Drag slicks are engineered for maximum traction and consistent ETs, even on 6-second cars that top 230 mph, making them suitable for nearly every drag racing application.

race cars and high performance cars have wider tires than typical cars because they produce more power and need more grip to handle the power and keep control of the car. the wider the tire the larger the contact patch (the amount touching the road at any given time) which equates to more traction and grip.
“The wider the rim, the more tire pressure you can run while maintaining the same footprint area. A higher inflation pressure can help prevent tire shake. Drag slick circumference (rollout) is also affected by rim width. Wider rims relax the tire and result in a smaller rollout measurement.
The real difference between these two are the direction of the cords inside the tire. A true slick is usually bias ply and it cords form as x pattern all the way around the tire. As far as drag racing goes, the radial will help keep you more stable while a slick will allow you to launch much harder.
Radials have less rolling resistance, allowing them to be quicker and faster relative to the ET Drag. Drivers report a more stable feel at the top end of the track because of the radial design and because they work with more air pressure than a bias-ply tire.
When a drag car launches off the line, the tires absorb a tremendous amount of stress. The carcass of the tire can sometimes start to break down while there is still plenty of tread on the tire. When your 60 and 330 foot times start to slip and become more inconsistent, consider replacing your tires.
Skinny Tires Up Front
A decision many drag racers make is to do what is called “staggering†or running skinny tires at the front of the vehicle to reduce weight and friction while installing wider or stock tires at the back to help with grip, control, and faster acceleration.A taller tire will also have more sidewall which is a good thing for drag racing. When you have them at a lower psi, the sidewall will flex (i.e. "wrinkle") which increases the area of the tire's footprint on the ground (contact patch) which offers more surface area to put power down.
But probably the most common cause of tire shake is excessive launch rpm, improper clutch clamping force or not enough first-gear ratio.†A first gear ratio that is too high numerically produces a mechanical advantage over the tire.

Racing slicks are designed to heat up and get sticky to give them the most traction, and they have the most road surface contact. Their compound is designed to handle heat more efficiently than passenger tires. They're also used on specially designed and controlled racing tracks.
Hoosier Tire proudly presents the only true steel-belted radial tire for the Pro Street and Hot Rod enthusiast, the Hoosier Pro Street Radial. Black sidewall markings guarantee the tires blend in with other custom additions to your car.
With the increased popularity of "small tire racing" and "no prep drag racing", we're proud to introduce several new bias ply slick options. First is the 10.5/28.0-15 (also known as a 28x10. 5 tire). This is the quintessential "small tire" size, and is used on everything from street cars to all out grudge cars.
All entries have the choice to either use a 28-inch tall by 10.6-inch wide bias slick or a 275/60/15 or Pro Bracket drag radial tire. Tire tread may not extend outside of the fender.
