Topdressing is a mix of 70% sand and 30% really good quality soil. It really does help improve the texture of the soil beneath your lawn.

In general, the purpose of spreading sand over established turf is either to level out uneven surfaces, cover tree roots or as a top-dressing. However, it is argued that simply adding sand to the lawn causes drainage and compaction issues, while adding no nutritional value to the soil below.
The textural class of the soil should be a/course sandy loam or loamy sand and should have less than a total of 10% silt plus clay. Silt loams and clays should be avoided. It should have the ability to transmit a minimum of six inches of water per hour.
Ten or twelve 20kg bags should be sufficient to give a good result. Always ensure the fertiliser spreader is working correctly to ensure an even spread is achieved, one of the items which frequently causes a problem is the gear box.
During the playing season, the recommended grass length is between 25 and 30mm long. To achieve this, it's recommended that your pitch has a minimum of 20 cuts per year, allowing for additional cuts to be made if the weather is good and promotes a faster rate of growth.

During late October consider applying a winter fertiliser, as with all fertilising ensure the grass can be washed off afterwards or apply just before the rain. On match days hand fork off any surface water from the field. It is also a good idea to aerate the grass during this period.

The Difference Between 3G and 4GThe main difference between 3G and 4G surfaces is that 3G pitches contain infill, whilst 4G systems do not. 3G pitches are the latest to be recognised by any accredited governing body. Therefore, you will only find 3G pitches as being publically endorsed by sports teams or influencers.
