As their names imply, 4K UHD has a considerably higher resolution than 1080P HD video. 4K resolution is exactly 3840 x 2160 pixels, whilst 1080P consists of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The 4K designation refers to the close to 4000 horizontal pixels. By comparison, 4K features 2160 pixels vertically; a considerable increase.
All Sky broadcast and on demand content is 1080i, not 1080p, so you're better off with the box on 1080i and letting the TV handle it.
YouTube and Vimeo have been streaming 1080p content for years. You could even stream content in higher resolutions. Netflix also offers 1080p HD content, and even 4K.
Film4 HD. Film4 HD launched on Sky on 2 September 2013, but requires customers to add the Sky HD upgrade to their subscription. Film 4 HD is not available on Freesat or Freeview.

- ITV1 HD (channel 51).
- Channel 4 HD (channel 52).
- BBC HD (channel 54).
ITV2 HD is the simulcast high-definition television channel of ITV2. It is available on Sky and Virgin Media as a pay-TV channel.
The 4K Fire TV boasts apps for Netflix, Prime Instant Video, BBC iPlayer, YouTube, ITV Player and Demand 5. If you have a 4K TV and an Amazon Prime Instant Video subscription, then the 4K Fire box could be a great addition to your 4K set up.
Freeview comes in many different forms. You can get it with a set top box, a streaming stick or a TV that has Freeview built in. Freesat is a good choice if you have bad TV signal in your area, or already have a satellite dish installed.
Yes, you need an aerial to receive Freeview on TV. The aerial needs to be securely plugged into the socket in the back of your Freeview TV or recorder. It also needs to be in the right position, and not damaged by the weather. It's worth going outside to check it's pointing in the same direction as others nearby.
Digital Terrestrial Transmission
Freeview HD provides all the great benefits of Freeview but brings free High Definition channels to the party. Full HD programmes have a much higher resolution than standard definition programmes.
You'll need the following equipment to enjoy Freeview:
- A Freeview TV, box or recorder. If you bought your TV after 2010, it will already have Freeview built into it.
- An aerial. To get Freeview, you need an aerial in good condition, pointing in the right direction towards a transmitter.
- A TV licence.
- An internet connection.

All Freeview Play equipment is HD and some models also support 4K Ultra HD. Currently, BBC iPlayer and YouTube are the two main sources of free UHD content that you can stream to your 4K UHD TV. You'll need a fairly fast internet connection to the get the best out of it – we recommend a minimum 40Mbps download speed.
Sky News has moved channel on Freeview. Previously on channel 82, Sky News is now available on channel 132. You can continue to get the first in breaking news and the best analysis on Sky channel 501, Virgin Media channel 602 and Freesat 202 as before.
1080p (1920×1080 pixels; also known as Full HD or FHD, and BT. 709) is a set of HDTV high-definition video modes characterized by 1,920 pixels displayed across the screen horizontally and 1,080 pixels down the screen vertically; the p stands for progressive scan, i.e. non-interlaced.
1920x1080 is full HD resolution standardized. In terms of number of pixels UXGA resolution (1920x1200) has 250 thousands more pixels than 1920x1080 full hd resolution.

1080p works by showing the whole frame in one frame, instead of splitting it up. This requires more computing power, but pretty much all devices now are capable of rendering 1080p. 1080p is generally sharper (better) looking than 1080i, so it is safe to say that 1080p at 30FPS is better than 1080i at 60FPS.

720p has an image resolution of 1280 pixels by 720 lines. Its quality isn't much better than a 720p TV. 1080p has a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. It's a progressive scan display rather than interlaced.

HD video refers to 1080p resolution, sometimes called "Full HD", and a significant step up from 480p, generally referred to as standard definition (SD), or "DVD quality." For many of us, 480p, 780p, 1080p etc. We know the higher ones equate to better videos, but that's about it.
