The best age to start piano lessons is typically between the ages of 6 and 9-years-old. While older students may have an easier time learning to play, students as young as 6-years-old can also learn since the keys of the piano are easy to operate.

I would recommend 1 lesson per week of 40 minutes (an hour for higher grades), and practice time of around 30 minutes per day on average. If you have a great natural musical flair, and/or you practice for much longer than what I've suggested above, then you may be able to progress through the grades much quicker.
As long as you do everything correctly there is no need for a teacher. But doing everything correctly is unlikely to happen. However you can avoid picking up bad habits by just being mindful and observant, and not having a teacher won't hold you back. Make sure you aren't learning/practicing bad technique.
