Sport weight yarn, sometimes known as 5-ply, sits between 4-ply yarn and DK yarn. It's usually knitted or crocheted on 3.50mm - 3.75mm needles or hooks and creates a beautiful lightweight fabric that is ideal for garments with colourwork, babywear and kidswear too.
A 4 ply is the same as fingering or baby weight and doubling it should get the same gauge as DK on the same needles. Other wise you'll have to use much smaller needles and if you follow the pattern numbers, will get a smaller item.
Double knitting (DK)Usually double the weight of 4ply, this is the most widely used weight.
American and British Yarn weight terms8 ply is the yarn that you'll find most easily in Australia (which I know from personal experience), and I've heard that it's pretty standard in the UK as well. It corresponds to what is called 'dk' weight in the US.
A ply was always a consistent size, so a two-ply yarn was very thin, while an eight-ply yarn was much bigger. A four-ply yarn can be bulky or medium weight, while singles can be super thin or super bulky, or anything in between for that matter.
These terms both refer to the thickness of your yarn strand. Traditionally ply described the number of threads used to make up the yarn strand. So if you unwound the end of a 4 ply strand you would have 4 threads, and there would be 8 threads in and 8 ply yarn. Ply is a term used often in NZ and Australia.
Double knitting yarn is also known as DK yarn, 8 ply yarn or light worsted weight yarn. It is assigned a 3 which is lightweight yarn as per the Craft Yarn Council ratings and the standard gauge is 21-26 stitches per 4”.
Avoid using singles yarn to make projects that will get a lot of friction, like socks, as they felt quicker as well. But for super-soft and warm hats, cowls, mittens, and sweaters? Single-ply yarn is an ideal candidate.
In North America, yarns are often referred to by their descriptive names, like a “worsted yarn” instead of a “number four yarn.” Under this system, worsted yarn is considered a medium weight number four yarn with a knitting gauge of 16-20 stitches for every four inches of knitting.

Structure of a 4 ply yarnThis was great and you could easily see that 2 strands of 4 ply are about the same thickness as DK, 2 strands of lace weight are about the same as 4 ply. could vary between being a very fine cobweb weight to extra bulky.
8/2 is a 2 ply, 8/4 is a 4 ply and 8/8 is an 8 ply. They get progressively fatter and therefore have less yardage per pound.
The 4 ply surgical mask is like a 3 ply face mask with an added extra layer with an activated carbon filter or one more filtering layer. They also have adjustable nose strip to give maximum protection and comfort to the user. It also gives protection against odors as well as organic vapors.
For example, it can be possible to use two strands of DK weight yarn to make a worsted/aran weight yarn, or two strands of worsted/aran to make a chunky yarn. This can certainly be done with success, but only if you knit a swatch first.
6 ply sock yarns are more of a double knit (DK) weight than your typical sock yarns which tend to be like a 4 ply. 6 ply sock yarns knit up faster and give a bulkier, warmer sock.
Sport weight yarn and DK (double knitting) weight yarn are often viewed as interchangeable, but they do have a slight difference. As you will see on the criteria listed with the icons to the right, sport weight yarn is a teeny bit lighter or finer than DK weight.
