As is the case in most poor states, the poorest town, Mount Olive, is not just the poorest in the state, but also one of the poorest in the entire country.The capital of North Carolina is generally considered a nice place to live, and families and young professionals will particularly take to it. The big city is part of the Research Triangle, a trio of cities that also include Chapel Hill and Durham, where you will find some of the best universities in the country.
Lexington, North Carolina is the Barbeque Capital of the world. Sweet Potatoes, Cotton and Tobacco-We grow all three very well. Emeralds-the 20 largest emeralds ever found in the US were found in North Carolina. The Great Smokey Mountains National Park-this is an extremely popular tourist destination.
The larger cities inland such as Raleigh/Durham, Winston-Salem and Greensboro still experience very hot summers and chilly winters, virtually the same for NC's larger city - Charlottle, more west. Definitely the Piedmont region and Charlotte, NC in particular is my favorite.
North Carolina was once home to both red wolves and gray wolves; now there are as few as 25 red wolves living within a five-county range in eastern North Carolina. Gray wolves were extirpated from the Appalachian region around a century ago.
