The unreserved tickets can be booked online using the Indian Railways mobile application or website. UTS mobile app can be used to not only book train tickets but also to buy platform tickets and monthly passes. Debit cards or credit cards, net banking or other electronic payment methods can be used to make payments.
Simply take a general unreserved ticket, board a sleeper compartment of a train and as soon as the TTE arrives or is visible, approach him saying that you are on a day journey and you are ready to pay the fare difference.
To travel in sleeper class with an unreserved ticket, all you have to do is give money to the TTE and he will give you a seat to travel.

PNR stands for “Passenger Name Record”. It is an Indian Railways database record against which journey details of a passenger or a group of passengers are saved. The ten-digit unique number has a passenger's personal information like name, age and gender.
If wait listed Tatkal tickets do not get confirmed or RAC, they automatically get cancelled and the passenger gets refund. Refunds: Confirmed tickets do not get refund upon cancellation. In case of RAC or waitlisted tickets refund is available if the same are cancelled up to 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure.

- Login to your IRCTC Account.
- Click to Booked Ticket History.
- List of tickets where date of Journey has elapsed.
- Select PNR for which TDR is to be filed and click "File TDR" Button.
- Select the passenger name from the ticket details for claiming TDR refund.
