The campus is extremely safe. The surrounding areas (around 4 blocks) are pretty safe.
What makes UPenn unique? Penn is the "pre-professional" Ivy, and that's really apparent the more time you spend here. The connections you make, even moreso than at other Ivies, can push you ahead in just about any field.
Although the main tourist areas of Philadelphia like Center City are generally safe, frequent travelers say other parts of the city (like South or West Philly) can be very dangerous. Use common sense during your stay: Keep your valuables near you (and preferably hidden from view) at all times.

UPenn SAT Essay Policy
UPenn does not require that applicants submit an SAT Essay along with the rest of the exam. Since the essay is an optional component of the test, students considering UPenn should take note of this policy.The 25th percentile New SAT score is 1440, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1560. In other words, a 1440 places you below average, while a 1560 will move you up to above average.
