70 mm is a mid-range lens good for all sorts of things from portraits to landscapes. 300 mm is a longer telephoto good for things like sports and wildlife. This means a lens like this is a workhorse capable of all manner of uses.
Well, it means you can read the writing on planes flying overhead. Planes that you can't even see when the lens is set to its widest focal length. The 50x optical zoom alone is the focal length equivalent of 24-1,200mm on a full frame body.
Getting back to the Sony's lens, 18-55 is the actual zoom. The lens has a focal length of 18mm at the wide end and 55mm at the long end. That's all you need to know. You can divide 55 by 18 and say it's a 3X zoom, but that doesn't tell you anything.
In this case, your 300mm lens would have a magnification of 6 (6x). Using this simple formula with the zoom lens, at its longest focal length, 300mm, it does have a magnification factor of 6 (300/50), but at its shortest focal length, 30mm, the magnification factor is 0.6 (30/50), a wide angle view.

I shot wildlife for 5 years with a 70-300mm lens on an APS-C camera which gives you 450mm equivalent focal length. The D5500 with a 70-300mm lens will be fine for most wildlife but, if you want to shoot small birds, expect to have to buy a big, expensive lens at sometime in the future.

The 18mm is a moderate wide-angle that is great for landscapes, architecture and environmental portraiture. 50mm lenses are fast lenses with a fast maximum aperture. The most basic 50mm lenses are typically F1. 8 - a very wide aperture. This means they are great for low-light photography (e.g. low-light portraiture or indoor shooting) as they allow more light into the camera's sensor.
The 70-300IS is the better wildlife lens. It offers slightly better colors, is just about as sharp as the 70-200 F4 L, and is built better than the 55-250 IS. Not to mention it has 50 more mm of reach, which is actually quite important for wildlife.

With a regular DSLR or mirrorless camera kit lens, the lens will offer 3x the magnification when you're fully zoomed in compared to when the lens is zoomed right out. This is easy to work out from the focal range of the lens. An 18-55mm kit lens has 3x the focal length at 55mm as it does at 18mm.
The difference is one-third of the field of view in linear terms. If a 200mm lens has a field of view of 6 x 9 feet at a certain distance, a 300mm lens will have a field of view of 4 x 6 feet, on the same camera at the same distance. I personally don't notice much difference between 200mm and 300mm when shooting.
