It's not a terrible film, but it (1) pales in comparison to its predecessors, both of which are among the most celebrated films of all time, (2) the acting (in particular, Sofia Coppola) is not as good, and (3) the story doesn't work well by itself and is tough to understand unless you're well-versed in The Godfather's
Michael is forced to step in to protect his father. His father has a stroke or something and is incapacitated and his enemies come to kill him. Michael steps in and protects him and in so doing becomes the new Godfather.

Puzo never said that The Godfather was in fact a true story, in fact he was committed to his story that he had no help from members of the mafia, and that all the information in the book was purely fictional.
The Corleone family's power and influence was exponentially higher than than what it was during Vito's reign. Although Michael inherited the empire, he inherited Don Vito's enemies as well. Vito was the better better man and the better father. Michael was the better Godfather .
At the beginning of the movie, he is a good man and a war hero in the normal US culture, but he is misunderstood in the mafia culture. But even then, he has his toe in mafia culture, mostly as an observer. Ultimately, Michael must choose between protecting his father and living a normal life.
It's a well-known fact that oranges represent mortal danger in The Godfather world. Vito Corleone buys oranges just before he is ambushed, and a cascade of oranges spills onto the sidewalk as he is shot. At the end of the first film, he cuts up an orange minutes before his death.
Tom was one of the most intelligent of the Corleones, as he had to be to be consigliere.
