Employers need to submit a monthly UIF declaration (also known as a UI-19 Form) to the Department of Labour. This document contains information relating to UIF contributions (employer and employee) in respect of each employee, as well as their employment status and non-contribution reason, if applicable.
The employer must forward this form to the Unemployment Insurance Fund at (012)337-1947/44 or 337-1580/81/82 or submit same at any branch of the UIF which is closest to the employer.
In order to capture the return information, you would need the following information:
- Employer UIF Reference Number.
- Employee Identification Number.
- Employee Start Work Date.
- Employee Salary details.
- Employee period of employment.
- Hours worked.
- Termination date (in the event the employee is terminated)
Delays can also be caused by claimants submitting incorrect information, such as bank details on their forms, and sometimes employers give incorrect reasons for unemployment on the UI-19 form.
Benefits are paid from the date on which the worker stops working. Benefits are only payable in respect of periods of illness lasting longer than 14 days and subject to credits. Benefits can be paid to a maximum of 238 days in any period of four years. I claimed UIF three years ago and then started working again.
The UIF payout system makes payments in the percentage of the salary you earned while contributing to it. The highest amount that can be paid is 58% of what you earned per day. Workers who earned less than R12,478 will receive around 36-56% of their average salary for the four years they had been making the payments.
