The Vex originated in the "flower game" conducted between the Light and Darkness in the primordial "garden" that existed prior to the creation of the universe. When the Light and Darkness began to war with one another, initiating the beginning of the universe, the patterns from the flower game escaped into it.

Not long after, the Darkness attacked Titan's arcologies by pulling on its oceans with a gravitational anomaly, deforming it into an oval and causing its tides to rise four times higher than normal.
The Collapse was a cataclysm in human history that nearly brought the species to extinction. Following the Golden Age after mankind had colonized the Solar System, the Darkness attacked humanity, presumably through the Black Fleet, and pushed it back to its homeworld, Earth.

The Haul is a massive, roughly spherical object towed behind the Drifter's ship, the Derelict. It contains a pocket of Unknown Space as part of the Nine Realms much similar to The Third Spire., accessible via an opening in the side facing the Derelict.
The Darkness is pure evil — depending on who you talk to. The Guardians wield the Light against various Darkness-related forces. The Hive, Taken, and Vex all worship or serve the Darkness in one way or another, and the Darkness' reach extends everywhere across the solar system.
However, it is a word used specifically in Destiny 2 lore when discussing the Darkness. A supposed leak had named a fully Darkness-aligned race as "the Veil," and since then, Bungie has continually evoked the word through physical manifestations or prose.

As written in the Books of Sorrow, Auryx slew Savathun to become the Taken King, Oryx. Oryx brought Savathun back to life with the ashes of his dead enemies. She eventually separated ways from her siblings and headed through a singularity.
This game was overseen by abstract mathematical principles personified as a "Gardener" and a "Winnower". The gardener represented the rules that allowed flowers to be placed, to spread, and to sustain themselves over each "tick" of game time, while the winnower represented the rules that culled flowers.
Most importantly, each season tells a story that moves the overall plot of Destiny 2 forward in interesting ways, even if it may not seem like it at first.
