COVID-19 concerns contributed to four of the 10 FBS conferences canceling their season in 2020, but the Big Ten is back in for 2020. The only conferences not playing are the Mountain West, Mid-American Conference and Pac-12, which make up 40 of the FBS schools.
Midway through August, six of the 10 FBS conferences plan to move forward with having a 2020 fall season: SEC, Big 12, ACC, AAC, Sun Belt and Conference USA. While four of their brethren sideline themselves, the six leagues aren't out of the woods yet.
All the Power Five conferences -- SEC, ACC, Big 12, Pac-12 and Big Ten -- have announced plans to play this season. The Pac-12 announced Thursday they'd begin play on November 6. The ACC and Big 12 have already restarted play, with the SEC set to follow Saturday.
According to Matt Howe of 247 Sports, 'Since the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, full capacity stadiums seem to be a reality for many programs in the 2021 season. So far in March, Alabama, Clemson, Texas and Oklahoma have all announced plans for full-capacity college football games this fall."
There are 125 Division 1 FCS football teams and 129 FBS football teams. FCS, or the Football Championship Subdivision, comprises 14 conferences: the Big Sky, Big South, CAA, Independent, Ivy, MEAC, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Pioneer, Southern, Southland and SWAC conferences.
As of Aug. 17, the American Athletic Conference, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big 12 Conference, Conference USA, Southeastern Conference (SEC) and Sun Belt Conference are all planning to play football this fall.
