Welding the spider gears is the only way to make an open diff spin both that I know of, but then you have a spool and you're gonna eat the hell out of your tires if it's a street truck. If traction is equal, and you're going in a straight line, and you have enough torque, both tires will spin.

The Problem
If you have uneven available grip between two wheels on the same axle, you have one wheel with higher torque carrying/transfer capacity than the other. When that happens in an open diff with no way to unevenly distribute torque, you can more easily overpower the low traction wheel.TOM: Actually, Jeannie, "posi-traction" is just Chevrolet's name for limited slip differential on passenger cars. You do not need to remove the pinion gear to convert an open diff to a limited slip. Take the time to give all the parts a thorough clean and remove any remnants of old loctite from the ring gear and its bolts. And thanks to everyone else too! Both wheels do spin if the surface is dry, the reason why you only saw one wheel spin has to do with gears in the axel. When a car around a corner one wheel has to travel faster than the other or the tires would skip.

Safer. A limited slip differential increases the safety of a vehicle because it increases the control a driver has over the vehicle. If turning a corner when the road is wet or icy, an open differential can cause the car to spin out of control because it can push the wheels across the road surface.
The reason is simple. With a limited slip, if one wheel has no traction, it will simply spin at the same speed as the wheel with traction. With traction control, the brake is applied to the wheel without traction, preventing it from spinning and thereby maintaining some lateral grip.
