In September 2013, J. Cole published a music video to his song known as "Crooked Smile" featuring TLC on YouTube, and he dedicated the video to Aiyana Stanley-Jones.

Initially majoring in computer science, Cole later switched to communication and business after witnessing the life of a lonely computer science professor. At the college, Cole was the president of Haraya, a pan-African student coalition. He graduated magna cum laude in 2007, with a 3.8 GPA.
Cole is actually a very good basketball player. He was a walk-on player at St. John's University, a Division I Men's Basketball program. However, he never showed up when he was called back by the team and focused on music instead.
