Europe. King Louis VIII of France launches a large southward offensive against the Albigensians and the Count of Toulouse. November 8 – Louis IX of France starts to rule, on the death of Louis VIII. King Sancho II of Portugal launches a large offensive against the Muslims, and takes the city of Elvas.
August – The first African slaves are brought to an English colony onboard an English privateer ship, arriving at Point Comfort, in the colony of Virginia. Slavery was previously established in the 16th century, as part of the founding of St. Augustine, Florida.
June – The first Dutch settlers arrive in New Netherland; they disembark at Governors Island. June 10 – Treaty of Compiègne is signed between the Kingdom of France and the Dutch Republic.

In the 1500s and 1600s almost 90% of Europeans lived on farms or small rural communities. Crop failure and disease was a constant threat to life. Wheat bread was the favorite staple, but most peasants lived on Rye and Barley in the form of bread and beer. These grains were cheaper and higher yield, though less tasty.
20 May – Gunpowder Plot conspirators first meet, in London. 18 August – the Treaty of London brings an end to the Anglo–Spanish War, an intermittent conflict which has been going on since 1585. 7 July – Parliament prorogued. 20 October – King James assumes the style king of Great Britain.
30 April – King Charles issues a proclamation attempting to stem emigration to the North American colonies. 27 June – English merchants led by captain John Weddell establish the first trading settlement at Canton. 30 June – William Prynne is branded as a seditious libeller, and sentenced to pillorying and mutilation.
A life of poverty. The majority of people during the era of Stuart Britain were poor, with a large portion living in terrible poverty. The 16th century witnessed a surge in population, which had a negative impact on living standards and led to an increase in poverty and hunger.

The Virginia Company of England made a daring proposition: sail to the new, mysterious land, which they called Virginia in honor of Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen, and begin a settlement. They established Jamestown, Virginia, on May 14, 1607, the first permanent British settlement in North America.
Virtually all credible historians, Christian and non-Christian alike, agree that there is plenty of evidence that Jesus actually lived 2000 years ago. Jewish and Roman historians of his era wrote about Jesus living at that time.
