If you ask a child what noises cattle make he will say “Moo.†Cattle can make several different sounds including mooing, bellowing, snorting and grunting, and they use these noises for different things. People who spend a lot of time with cattle can tell what sort of mood the herd is in by the noises they are making.
bray Add to list Share. When you bray, you make the "hee-haw" sound that a donkey makes. The sound itself is known also as a bray. A mule or donkey's bray is loud and jarring when compared to the gentle neigh of a pony.
The sound that a horse makes is called a neigh. A horse's happy neigh is sometimes a greeting to other horses. You can use neigh to talk about the noise your horse makes, also known as a whinny or a bray.
Creepy CatsThe noise of screeching bobcats has been likened to a child wailing in distress. Typically a sound made by competing males in winter during the mating season, it can be heard in many regions of North America. (See pictures of cats you've never heard of.)
Whining and moaning noises, generally at night, can most often be attributed to coons or porcupines. Young coons fight and play among themselves and are punished by their parents for infractions of local house rules, with a fine collection of outcries invariably resulting. Snuffling and grunting could be a bear.
The stories go that the fisher makes this terrible high-pitched screaming, which sounds like a woman being murdered, either when they are mating or when they are attacking another animal. The internet is also rife with postings and stories on the “fisher cat screech†and YouTube videos of purported fisher screams.
In addition to the sound of your trash cans falling over, northern raccoons are also responsible for some eerie sounds in the night, including loud screeches, screams, whimpers and whines during social squabbles, and a bird-like warble while foraging.
Porcupines whine, moan and grunt, and also engage in battle chatter, a strident sound made by clicking their teeth. During mating season, both males and females make these sounds, along with wails, shrieks, and siren-like screaming. A female porcupine is only fertile for eight to 12 hours a year.
While they're usually silent, skunks do have the ability to produce a range of sounds. They can squeal, hiss, screech, whimper, grumble, smack their lips, and stomp loudly. If you've heard the sounds of a skunk, call your local Critter Control.
16. Frogs — ribbit. In English, frogs croak or say ribbit, and you can thank Hollywood for that! Ribbit is the accepted sound for a frog in English, but only one frog species actually says ribbit, and it was introduced into our language by Hollywood when sounds came to the movies.
In Japanese, pigs "buu," in German they "grunz," and in Swedish they "nöff." In English, however, we describe the sound pigs make as an oink and we say that when they make this noise, they oink.
