Though both seasons take place within the Stephen King universe (and in the same town), any connections between Castle Rock Seasons 1 and 2 are minor. As series co-creator Dustin Thomason explained to reporters at New York Comic-Con, Season 2 exists in the same timeline as Season 1, but is largely a new story.
What's interesting is that King's John Merrill also spent time in Shawshank, as revealed in Needful Things, which is basically the main inspiration for Castle Rock. So the two John Merrills of the show feel like they both were inspired by the one of King's fiction.
Castle Rock has expanded in its second season, both story-wise and geographically. Because Castle Rock isn't the only King town to play a part here. A huge chunk of this season is spent in Jerusalem's Lot, the setting of King's vampire novel 'Salem's Lot. The town isn't merely used for background color, either.
Castle Rock first appeared in King's 1979 novel The Dead Zone and has since been referenced to or used as the primary setting in many other works by King. As a native of Durham, Maine, King was inspired by his hometown when creating Castle Rock.
In the water, Annie finally follows through with what she started when her half sister was a baby and drowns Joy — in her mind baptizing her and cleansing her from any remaining impurity. After she murders her, the nurse finds a goodbye letter letter from Joy, explaining why she has to leave.
Misery character Annie Wilkes (played by Lizzy Caplan) is the new main character in season 2 of Castle Rock. The trailer portrays the paranoid and dark side to Wilkes who was originally played by Kathy Bates in the 1990 horror film Misery.
Bill Skarsgård Isn't In 'Castle Rock' Season 2, But He Could Still Return To The Show. Though Castle Rock will still be set in its titular town, the mysterious "kid" — and by extension, star Bill Skarsgård — won't be in Season 2.
Tim Robbins may not have seen the last of the Shawshank prison. The actor, who played wrongly convicted inmate Andy Dufresne in the beloved 1994 film The Shawshank Redemption, is returning to the world of Stephen King 25 years later in the second season of Hulu's horror anthology Castle Rock.
Jerusalem's Lot, Maine (often shortened to 'Salem's Lot or just the Lot) is a fictional town and a part of writer Stephen King's fictional Maine topography. 'Salem's Lot has served as the setting for a number of his novels, novellas, and short stories.
Abrams, Stephen King, Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason. Season 1 was filmed in Orange throughout summer 2017 and then sporadically until January last year. Cue the creepy music: Stephen King's house in Bangor, ME, is now vacant. After 37 years of living in this small Maine city, the literal King of horror novels is decamping elsewhere.
This story acts as a sequel to King's 1975 novel 'Salem's Lot, and is also connected to the story of "Jerusalem's Lot", which is a prequel to both, while also appearing in Night Shift. Both stories were later collected in the 2005 Salem's Lot Illustrated Edition.

As Breichen, Barlow corresponded for twelve years with Hubert "Hubie" Marsten, a former Depression-era Boston hitman living in the town of Jerusalem's Lot, Maine, or "The Lot".
Annie Wilkes' misery transforms Castle Rock in season 2. The anthology has learned from its mistakes with season 2, a sort of modern-day prequel centering on one of Stephen King's most famous characters: Misery's Annie Wilkes.
Throughout Season 1, wherever The Kid goes, tragedy, madness and death seem to follow. That's why Warden Lacey locked him up to begin with, and said he was the devil. It turns out the same thing was true of Henry when he was in the wrong universe, according to Matthew, which was also part of why Henry was caged.
The 1st 100 or so pages of any King novel are a little slow going, but Salem's lot is a great read. If you like it, pick up Night Shift, a collection of his early short stories. There are 2 or 3 Lot related stories in it that are great. His short stories would still be good.
If you have never seen "Salem's Lot" in its 184 minute presentation, please do. It's a classic in the horror genre and will enrich your perspective of the plot by 100%. Suspenseful and actually scares you from time to time.

Salem's Lot Remake Release DateA third screen adaptation of Stephen King's Salem's Lot was announced as being in the works on April 23, 2019. The remake is happening at Warner Bros., the studio behind the IT films, Doctor Sleep, and lots of other King movies and TV shows.
These revelations in Episode 9, which takes place before the events of Castle Rock, explains a lot about how everyone got where they are in the show. The Kid isn't a bad guy, he's just another Henry trying to get home to the potentially pregnant wife he was torn from when he slipped into the wrong universe.
Anyone whose ever seen Salem's Lot knows that the main plot of the movie (and the novel) is that it is the neighborhood of many vampires. What the Castle Rock audience got with Episode 4, “Restore Hope,” was the revelation that something even scarier then vampires has been residing in Salem's Lot.
Stephen King TV Show 'Castle Rock' Will Reveal 'It' Clown Pennywise's True Identity. He, along with Sissy Spacek, who played Carrie in the 1976 film of the same name, will appear in Castle Rock—not as their characters, but as other people entirely.
Every Stephen King Reference and Easter Egg in Castle Rock. The new Hulu series Castle Rock doesn't adapt any single Stephen King story directly, but instead takes place in a world of interconnected short stories and novels set within the author's favorite creepy Maine town.
When Hulu made the decision to end Castle Rock after season 2, it was not based on reviews or viewership. Instead, it was based on the fact that they had always intended to conclude the series after Annie Wilkes's story.
It continually feels fresh and stressful. Dec 3, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review… Like its impressive and satisfying inaugural run, this latest season of Castle Rock is filled with clever writing, delightful callbacks to King's book universe and terrific performances.

Castle Rock: The Kid is not Flagg.
The Angel. Bill Skarsgard's cameo in Castle Rock season 2 turns out to be a pretty inconsequential one in the end. While the Angel does remind us for a few episodes that 'Salem's Lot is a pretty great novel, we still don't really understand his plan for Castle Rock.
