Osteons are structural units of compact bone. Each osteon consists of a central canal, which contains nerve filaments and one or two blood vessels, surrounded by lamellae. Lacunae, small chambers containing osteocytes, are arranged concentrically around the central canal.

Compact bone forms the largest and strongest structure in the humerus, surrounding the trabeculae in the ends and the medullary cavity in the shaft. Finally, the ends of the humerus are capped by a thin layer of hyaline known as articular cartilage that acts as a shock absorber in the joints.
Compact bone is the denser, stronger of the two types of bone tissue ((Figure)). It can be found under the periosteum and in the diaphyses of long bones, where it provides support and protection. The microscopic structural unit of compact bone is called an osteon, or Haversian system.

The osteocytes are arranged in concentric rings of bone matrix called lamellae (little plates), and their processes run in interconnecting canaliculi. The central Haversian canal, and horizontal canals (perforating/Volkmann's) canals contain blood vessels and nerves from the periosteum.
