The Bodo are the largest minority group in Assam and are concentrated in the northern areas of the Brahmaputra River valley.

Boros are officially identified as "Boro, Borokachari" scheduled tribe under the constitution of India. Boros speak Boro language, a Boro-Garo language of the Tibeto-Burman family, which is recognised as one of twenty-two scheduled languages in the Indian Constitution.
The Eighth Schedule to the Constitution consists of the following 22 languages:- ( Sindhi language was added in 1967. Thereafter three more languages viz., Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali were included in 1992. Subsequently Bodo, Dogri, Maithili and Santhali were added in 2004.
