A total of 18 people have lost their lives either while in space or in preparation for a space mission, in four separate incidents. All seven crew members died, including Christa McAuliffe, a teacher from New Hampshire selected on a special NASA programme to bring civilians into space.
The flag is no longer standing. In fact, it's been flat on the ground since the moment Aldrin and Neil Armstrong lifted off.
Since the nylon flag was purchased from a government catalog, it was not designed to handle the harsh conditions of space. A review of photographs taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) indicates that flags placed during the Apollo 12, Apollo 16, and Apollo 17 missions were still standing as of 2012.
An astronaut's footprint can last a million years on the surface of the moon. It may have been decades since we last set foot on the moon, but its surface is still marked with the historic footprints of the 12 astronauts who stomped across it. That's because the moon has no atmosphere.
But anyone can buy a deed to land on the moon right now. The Lunar Registry ("Earth's leading lunar real-estate agency") sells such deeds on its website for about $20 an acre. Doyle says that some kind of lunar governing body is necessary to recognize and enforce property rights, but no such body exists.
The United States, the Soviet Union and China are the three nations which have successfully landed their spacecraft on the moon. And, the US is the only country to have ever put people on the moon. Russia (the USSR), Japan, China, the European Space Agency (ESA), and India have all made visits to the moon via probes.
How many countries have flags on the moon? The United States is the only country where people have physically placed flags on the moon. Four other countries — China, Japan, India and the former Soviet Union — and the European Space Agency have sent unmanned spacecraft or probes to the moon.
To date, the late scientist Eugene Shoemaker is still the only person whose remains have been sent to the Moon. Even casual stargazers are likely to recognize Shoemaker's name from the famed Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (which had broken into fragments) that impacted Jupiter in 1994.

For now, our anomalously large Moon is spinning away from us at a variable rate of 3.8 centimeters per year. But, in fact, the Earth and Moon may be on a very long-term collision course --- one that incredibly some 65 billion years from now, could result in a catastrophic lunar inspiral.
Not even the Hubble Space Telescope can discern evidence of the Apollo landings. The laws of optics define its limits. Hubble's 94.5-inch mirror has a resolution of 0.024″ in ultraviolet light, which translates to 141 feet (43 meters) at the Moon's distance. In visible light, it's 0.05″, or closer to 300 feet.
Five S-IVB third stages of Saturn V rockets from the Apollo program crashed into the Moon, and are the heaviest human-made objects on the lunar surface. Humans have left over 187,400 kilograms (413,100 lb) of material on the Moon.

The typical red laser pointer is about 5 milliwatts, and a good one has a tight enough beam to actually hit the Moon—though it'd be spread out over a large fraction of the surface when it got there. The atmosphere would distort the beam a bit, and absorb some of it, but most of the light would make it.
How far is the moon from Earth?
Tonight's celestial event is the first eclipse of the year and is sometimes called a "blood moon" because of the red appearance of the moon's surface when the moon is completely covered by the Earth's shadow.
In space, or on the moon, there's no atmosphere to spread the light around, and the sky will appear black at midday – but that doesn't mean it's not just as bright. Even in space, stars are relatively dim, and simply don't produce enough light to show up in photos set for bright sunlight.
Space is dark because there is no atmosphere to scatter the sunlight. As there is nothing else in space to shine, hence we never see the Sun's light.
Of course we can see stars in space. We see stars more clearly from space than we do from Earth, which is why space telescopes are so useful. In January, the true colour of the Universe was declared as somewhere between pale turquoise and aquamarine, by Ivan Baldry and Karl Glazebrook at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore Maryland. They determined the cosmic colour by combining light from over 200,000 galaxies within two billion light years of Earth.
It's a true physical effect, caused by the fact that – when the moon is low in the sky – you're seeing it through a greater thickness of Earth's atmosphere than when it's overhead. The atmosphere filters out the bluer wavelengths of white moonlight (which is really reflected sunlight).
Daytime on one side of the moon lasts about 13 and a half days, followed by 13 and a half nights of darkness. When sunlight hits the moon's surface, the temperature can reach 260 degrees Fahrenheit (127 degrees Celsius). When the sun goes down, temperatures can dip to minus 280 F (minus 173 C).
