The nickname "The Big Apple" originated in the 1920s in reference to the prizes (or "big apples") rewarded at the many racing courses in and around New York City. So, technically the first skyscraper built in the city was The Tower Building in 1889. Chrysler Building. At 1,046 feet (318.9 m), the structure was the world's tallest building for 11 months before it was surpassed by the Empire State Building in 1931. It is the tallest brick building in the world with a steel framework.

So, it should be clear that with what Smelling estimated to be millions of cubic feet of helium trapped in Manhattan's bedrock, of course Manhattan will never sink. The Bedrock of New York City. New skyscrapers were not being built close to downtown, but rather were mostly being constructed in midtown, 4 miles north. This has to do in part with the depth of the bedrock underneath the city.

The bedrock underlying much of Manhattan is a mica schist known as Manhattan schist of the Manhattan Prong physiographic region. It is a strong, competent metamorphic rock that was created when Pangaea formed. It is well suited for the foundations of tall buildings.
