The standard edition is fine. The game is it's own complete product. The DLC adds a few cosmetics, a short quest, and some Horde modes to farm. It's great dlc if you just want more of the game, but I've never felt like I'm missing out by not having it.
It's definitely harder than the rest of the game on Hard Mode - though most of this comes down to not having chips yet that you can use to combat the difficulty. If there's one game you should give another shot though, it's NieR: Automata.

No, NieR Automata + The Evil Within PC Aren't Fixed On GamePass - But Are They Better? The Steam version of Nier: Automata has famously struggled with performance and technical issues, and players have turned to community-made solutions such as Kaldaien's "FAR" mod (Fix Automata Resolution) to solve these.
Square Enix has announced that the frustratingly clunky PC port of its beloved RPG NieR: Automata will finally receive some much-needed attention, courtesy of a new patch that is currently in the works.
You should start with Nier: Automata. It is technically the sequel to Nier Replicant, but it builds upon the original game in every way. The combat is faster and more pleasurable, the story is easier to follow, and its alternate playthroughs change the game in dramatic ways.
It really doesn't matter if someone players Nier Replicant before or after Nier Automata. The two games are set in the same universe, and they're definitely connected. However, the events of Automata are self-contained enough that players don't need to play Replicant to understand them.
Both games are based in the same world and the two will only differ in the lead character's design and relationship with the character of Yonah. In Nier Gestalt, you play as the father of Yonah looking for the cure to the Black Scrawl virus.
TL;DR: No, you don't have to play Drakengard 3 prior to NieR:Gestalt/Replicant, although this comes from someone who has only watched playthroughs of these games.
