The beach is a mixture of pebbles, sand and shingle, so I reckon it could be a good spot for building sandcastles! Just down the road is West Bexington Beach. This beach is excellent for walks and offers amazing views to both the East and the West. It is a shingle beach.

Curving away from the arch the the sand and shingle beach at Durdle Door is backed by the high limestone cliffs of the Jurassic Coast. Even if you feel less energetic this beach is a beautiful spot to relax with a picnic, whilst taking in the spectacular scenery.
Lulworth Cove is a very sheltered pebble beach in a remarkable, horseshoe shaped cove, formed ten thousand years ago by erosion from the sea. There is ample parking, a cafe, toilets and boat trips in summer to Durdle Door and Mupe Bay.
Chesil draws visitors regardless of season, although it is seldom busy. The entire stretch remains almost entirely undeveloped and the golden pebbles stretch in a steep shingle bank as far as the eye can see. The Chesil Beach Visitor Centre near Portland is well worth a visit during your time on the south coast.
One explanation is that Chesil Beach initially formed from predominantly sandy deposits found in Lyme Bay. This developed into a bar shape out in the bay and as water levels rose rapidly (at the end of the last ice age 20,000-14,000 years ago), the bar was eroded and the driven onshore and wedged close to the land.
