Did Disney-Lucasfilm really “decanonize” the EU, though? “While Lucasfilm always strived to keep the stories created for the EU consistent with our film and television content as well as internally consistent, Lucas always made it clear that he was not beholden to the EU. First off: There is no way to submit something you've written related to Star Wars for consideration. Every book/short story/etc. about our favorite galaxy far, far away is produced as part of a licensing agreement between publishers and Lucasfilm/Disney.
Author Michael Kaminski writes in The Secret History of Star Wars that Lucas decided to start with the fourth episode "due to technical and storytelling reasons." He further explained, "Lucas had a massive, expensive epic on his hands, and divided the story into three separate films.
Star Wars existed first as a screen play. Before the movie came out, however, it was published as a paperback novel, published November 12, 1976. I read the novel a few months before the movie came out on May 25, 1977. I went to the movie because of the book.
