They don't accommodate a great amount of head shapes so unless they fit you nicely I'd say they're not worth the money. So go and try them on. Don't buy online unless you're sure of your head shape and size and so on.
The industry standard states that the lifespan of a motorcycle helmet is five years. That is as long as you have not cut its life short by an accident or impact to it. If that happens you should definitely not use it, time to trash it!
How can I tell what model SHOEI helmet I have? The model of your helmet is listed on the chinstrap cover, opposite the D-Rings, on the vinyl portion of the cover.
If you care a lot about light weight, the AGV K6 is the clear choice. If you want the option of a photochromic faceshield, the Shoei RF-1200 is the obvious choice. If you are happy carrying both a clear and smoked faceshield and swapping them, the AGV is probably better for its slick shield-change mechanism.
Shoei produces nearly all of their helmets for the American market with one internal shape: intermediate oval.
Arai uses a single-piece inner shell, but it's made up of multiple densities for structural integrity… but of course, this is more expensive to make. The cost to produce any helmet is of course going to be passed on to the customer, and some of the top brands – like Arai and Shoei for instance – are hand made in Japan.
The Shoei RF-1200 has been DOT/ECE 22-05 approved for sale so has passed the minimum safety testing requirements. The RF-1200's predecessor, the RF-1100, scored 5/5 (top marks) in the SHARP test, so we expect the RF-1200 to score well in terms of safety too.

The Scorpion EXO-R710 is a street helmet that features a dual-density EPS liner. It's a sturdy and durable model that provides excellent protection on the road and reduces the chances of injuries. Thanks to the aero-tuned ventilation, it's also very comfortable. The ventilation is good but not extraordinary.

Arai makes a quality lid and once upon a time was arguably the best out there. If you have the money and buy an Arai, you will end up with a fine helmet. However if you live on a budget, dropping $500 plus on a new Arai and skimping elsewhere is not something I would recommend.

The comfort liner is likely the reason for the motorcycle helmet expiration because it is made from EPS foam, which can lose its shape over time. Additionally, the foam interior provides a rider with a shock absorbent pad necessary for softening the blow from a collision.
The better design, materials, and features make a motorcycle helmet more expensive. Other motorcycle helmets made of less expensive materials like polycarbonate can be heavier, noisier, less comfortable, and lack good ventilation.
