There's no perfect baby stain remover that works for every family, though. Making a paste of OxiClean and spray stain remover, soaking in a mixture of very hot water and OxiClean, and using enzyme-packed Era detergent to pre-treat stains are all common suggestions.
In summary, here's how you remove stubborn poop stains:
- Remove/rinse off the poop.
- Soak the garment/diaper/carpet in warm water.
- Use stain remover of choice.
- Scrub the stained area with a toothbrush and let sit for at least 10-15 minutes.
- Wash normally.
- Sun-dry if possible.
To treat this type of stain, soak in water first. If after your first attempt the stain still won't go away, try applying Shout or Spray 'n Wash and then run through the laundry machine again.
Get cleaner laundry in every load

- Wash as normal with detergent and OxiClean™.
Because Vanish is safe to use on baby clothes, it's a super simple process; for coloured clothes, just add a scoop of Vanish Gold Oxi Action Stain Removal Powder or a dose of Vanish Gold Oxi Action Stain Removal Gel to every load. Wash as usual with your regular detergent or a baby-friendly detergent.

Tide Free & Gentle is available in Liquid and Tide Pods and is safe to use on baby's laundry and is still tough enough to work on removing stains for the entire family. When tested on the usual baby stains, the cleaning power of Tide worked well in removing formula, breast-milk, baby food, and diaper stains.
OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover is color safe. However, not all clothing is colorfast. Always remember to test for colorfastness in an inconspicuous area before using the product. For best results, add all powders to water before adding fabrics.
They rate AspenClean, Whole Foods' 365 Everyday Value, Attitude, and biokleen as some of the safest laundry detergents on the market.
Tip: Homemade Oxiclean Make your own oxi-clean using 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup peroxide, 1 cup warm water. Mix in a jar and shake well. Add it to your regular load, or pre-soak for the night.
TO KILL BACTERIA AND VIRUSES†: Add 1 scoop of OxiClean to 1 gallon of water. Immerse laundry for 15 minutes prior to starting the wash cycle. Safe for colorfast fabrics. Follow manufacturer's instructions for water temperature and for cleaning garment or item.
That stained shirt has been sitting at the bottom of the laundry bin forever, the stain has definitely set-in. But with OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover you can get out even tough, set-in stains. SOAK 1-6 hours depending on severity of stain, some stains may require more time to soak.

Detergents. It is a common recommendation that baby clothes should be washed separately, using special “baby” detergents that supposedly leave fewer residues and are therefore less likely to cause skin irritation.
Oxiclean contains about 50-60% active oxygen bleach (Sodium percarbonate). It is a sodium perborate based product. While sodium perborate is excellent for cleaning and stain removal in hot water its very limited solubility in lukewarm and cold water does limit the scope of its use.
Disposal:
- Best: Use up or give away. Rinse out empty container and recycle if the type and color of plastic or paperboard is recyclable in your area.
- Second Best: Flush household amounts of unwanted liquid detergent down an inside drain with plenty of water.
- Third Best: Hold for a household hazardous waste collection.
According to an OxiClean representative, the oxygen in peroxide and refined baking soda acts to lift stains to the surface, making them easier to scrub out. It also is not recommended on rust and other metallic stains because of the oxidation process.
STEP 2: Prepare the deck-cleaning solution.Into the bucket, add 2 cups of powdered oxygen bleach (e.g., OxiClean, found in the laundry detergent aisle), which is milder than liquid chlorine bleach. Add 1/4 cup of liquid dishwashing soap and stir just enough to disperse it through the solution.
The combination sounds like it'd be a powerful disinfectant, but the two should never be mixed. "Together, they produce chlorine gas, which even at low levels, can cause coughing, breathing problems, and burning, watery eyes," says Forte.
The Three Things You Should Never Mix with Vinegar
- Hydrogen peroxide + vinegar. You may assume that combining these two ingredients in the same bottle will boost their cleaning power, but it's more likely to increase your risk of going to the emergency room.
- Bleach + vinegar.
- Baking soda + vinegar.
Baking soda and vinegar's cleaning and deodorizing properties work wonders in the wash. Add ½ cup of baking soda in with your detergent to help boost its cleaning power. One cup of vinegar poured in during the rinse cycle will help kill bacteria in the load and doubles as a chemical-free fabric softener.
For shiny surfaces, rinse with clean, wet cloth. A scoop of OxiClean® Versatile Stain Remover should be added to every load to boost the power of your detergent and fight stains you didn't know were there. Pretreat or presoak for tough stains. ¼ scoop per regular load, ¾ scoop per large or heavily soiled load.
Bleach and Pine-Sol: Mixing these two chemicals in large amounts will create chlorine gas and can restrict your breathing.
The combination of dish soap and vinegar is highly effective for a few different reasons. However, vinegar alone will simply run off of most surfaces, while dish soap is too thick to use as a spray. But when you mix them together, you get an effective, sprayable cleaner that sticks to any surface!
Mixing bleach and rubbing alcohol can create chloroform which can damage your liver, kidneys, brain, heart and bone marrow. Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar make peracetic acid which is highly corrosive and unsafe.
I use it as laundry detergent along with some fabric softener. It works really well at brightening whites and getting out stains such as grass and grease, but doesn't seem to fade colors. If I have a really bad stain, I will scoop some OxiClean into a sink full of water and then soak the garment overnight.
