In much of the world, holders of doctoral degrees are generally addressed as Doctor. In the USA, however, while the Juris Doctor or J.D. is indeed a professional doctorate, by custom and legal convention lawyers do not use the title of doctor.
Lawyers that I have been around generally have about 300% more common sense than most doctors, and are much more observant of their surroundings and the situations around them. While their function in society is nowhere near as positive as a doctor's function, most lawyers are easier to be around than doctors.

An able Engineer may earn more than an average Lawyer, an able Lawyer may earn more than an average engineer. It is the competence of the professional that brings reputation and higher pay or fees.
Most doctors who go to law school become consultants. Very very few go to law school to become plaintiff lawyers. that's not the high brow law, that's the law the guys at the other end of the graduating class practice. Yes being a doctor might be helpful for law school admissions, or at least interesting.

Lawyers are Doctors, Too. Like medical school students who earn an M.D. and graduate school students in any number of academic disciplines who earn a Ph. D., most law school students also receive a doctoral degree–juris doctor, to be precise.
Simple they know laws and could do whatever they want legally, they are expected to win contracts, court cases… that's why they are respected and the most important reason is Because they are supposed to earn more than everyone else.

Doctors are respected because they provide services that people value highly, they have a university degree which is difficult to obtain and they are well paid. Some of these are causes and some are effects: for example, the high pay probably is both a result of and cause for the respect.
The average Doctor is as intelligent as the average person. We Gain knowledge and experiences through education. Sure Doctors do all those things as well but they don't do it often where as some people do. School and education does not finish at grade 12 or 13 as many many think.
Being a physician is prestigious. It has nothing to do with income potential or anything else. Investment bankers, dentists, lawyers and other professions may earn more money than physicians but even the lowest paid physician will garner more respect than these other professionals.
