When you smell perfume on a person or by wafting perfume from a bottle, you are smelling a vapor of the scent compounds that have become volatilized (are in the gas phase) and diffuse through the air and into your nose. Perfume is a mixture of fragrant oils in an ethanol/water solvent.
Common ingredients found in perfumes are: acetone, ethanol, benzaldehyde, formaldehyde, limonene, methylene chloride, camphor, ethyl acetate, linalool and benzyl alcohol. Phthalates and synthetic musks are also commonly used potentially hazardous ingredients.
Most full perfumes are made of about 10-20% perfume oils dissolved in alcohol and a trace of water. Colognes contain approximately 3-5% oil diluted in 80-90% alcohol, with water making up about 10%. Toilet water has the least amount—2% oil in 60-80% alcohol and 20% water.
steps
- Pour 25 to 30 drops of essential oil in your bottle.
- Fill the bottle halfway with witch hazel.
- Fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water.
- Shake bottle to combine all the ingredients.
- Insert a sprig of dried flowers and herbs to finish off your fragrant spray.
As fragrances are made from Organic materials they do not have a pH. pH is an indication of how acidic or alkaline the environment is, and some Perfumery materials are not stable in an acidic or alkaline environment.
Remember, water and oil don't mix! The alcohol proof and percentage is too low to be an effective solubilizer for essential oils. Glycerin is completely water soluble. Glycerin is not an appropriate carrier for essential oils because oil and water don't mix!
Using EthanolHigh-proof, food-grade ethanol is the easiest alcohol to obtain. Vodka or Everclear (a pure 190-proof alcoholic beverage) are often used in perfume making because they're clear and don't have a particularly "boozy" odor.
Popular fixative solutions
- Phosphate buffered formalin.
- Formal calcium.
- Formal saline.
- Zinc formalin (unbuffered)
- Zenker's fixative.
- Helly's fixative.
- B-5 fixative.
- Bouin's solution.
A fixative is a stabilizing or preservative agent: Fixative (drawing), a liquid usually sprayed over a finished piece of artwork to better preserve it and prevent smudging. Fixation (histology), a solution used to preserve or harden fresh tissue of cell specimens for microscopic examination.
A fixative is used to equalize the vapor pressures, and thus the volatilities, of the raw materials in a perfume oil, as well as to increase the tenacity. Natural fixatives are resinoids (benzoin, labdanum, myrrh, olibanum, storax, tolu balsam) and animal products (ambergris, castoreum, musk, and civet).
DPG (dipropylene glycol) is a liquid solvent used in preparing fragrance for use in incense making. To prepare Natures Garden Concentrated Fragrance oils for incense use: mix 1 part fragrance to 2 parts DPG. Gallons of DPG are sold by volume, not weight. However, a gallon contains approximately 8.5 pounds.
Amyris essential oil works best as a natural fixative in milder perfume formulations and blends well with cedarwood, citronella, conifer oils (like balsam fir or pine), cypress, frankincense, geranium, jasmine absolute, lavender, lemon, oakmoss, patchouli, sweet orange, tangerine, ho wood, rose absolute, vetiver, ylang
Isopropyl Myristate (IPM) is used in the fragrance world to dilute materials. This product is used in diffusers. It has no odor.
Di Propylene Glycol is a solvent commonly used in the fragrance industry to dilute otherwise insoluble materials – this is more commonly used than perfumers alcohol due to the fact you can use it in bases other than alcoholic fragrance.
Perfume Materials
- 1/2 ounce jojoba oil or sweet almond oil.

With no real heart, the fragrance enhancer is comprised from woody notes which smell potent when first spritzed, but settle down into something much softer. Naturally it best complements similarly woody and aromatic scents, working less well with citrus or floral fragrances.
Dab a little perfume oil onto a cloth packet or a cotton pad, let it dry, and then put it in your drawer underneath your clothes. Your clothes will smell subtly fantastic all day. Apply early – For maximum effect, apply your perfume oil well before you have to leave. A good rule of thumb is 30 minutes or so.
Eau de Parfum (EDP) is the strongest type of perfume we sell. Eau de Parfum contains between 10-20% of perfume oil, and is a popular choice with both perfume brands and customers. Eau de Parfum will generally last around 8 hours. Eau de Toilette (EDT) is next, containing around 5-15% of perfume oil.
88 fragrance, No. 88 EdP 200ml, is the longest lasting yet. The new eau de parfum formula is a stronger version of the original scent, while the larger sized bottle means it will last on your dresser for much longer.
The ideal time to spray perfume is right after a shower when the heat has opened your pores and you've applied body lotion. The more hydrated (and yes, even oily) skin is, the longer fragrance will last—it's why we're all more sensitive to scent in the summer heat. 2) Spray it on your clothes.
As a general rule, you can expect that:
- Citrus fruit, frankincense, lemongrass, neroli, spruce, tea tree and pine essential oils can last for 1 to 2 years.
- Sandalwood, patchouli and vetiver essential oils have the ability to last for 4 to 8 years.
- Most other essential oils are effective for 2 to 3 years.
Why doesn't fragrance last on me? Unfortunately for some people, your body chemistry causes perfumes to evaporate more quickly from your skin. Perfumers would say that your skin throws off fragrance. Instead of lasting for some 3 to 4 hours, it disappears within an hour, sometimes shorter.
It turns out, the pulse points are the best places to apply solid fragrances because of the warmth of your blood caused by your heart rate. Once the scent is applied to skin, it takes about 30 seconds to warm up to the same temperature as your skin.
The basic professional perfume making process is the same as the amateur perfuming process, but the materials are not.
- Use pure ethanol or "perfumer's alcohol" instead of vodka.
- Use different fragrance materials, not only essential oils.
- Use fixatives in your perfume.
