These include animals like leeches, insects, snails, earthworms, frogs, tadpoles, crayfish and animal remains (or carrion), as well as plants like algae, water lilies and duckweed.
It tends to grow as dense colonies in quiet waters of lakes, ponds, marshes and streams, at depths up to 6 meters (20 feet). It grows best in high-nutrient waters. Coontail can grow at relatively low light intensities and tolerates shade more than most submerged aquatic plants.
When planting hornwort, keep in mind that this is naturally more of a floating plant. Although it can be planted in the substrate it might start losing its bottom leaves after a while, which doesn't look too great.
These include a high light intensity and clear water to allow the light to penetrate throughout the tank. Keep your water clean by performing regular partial water changes. When kept with other plants, hornwort will quickly diminish the tank's supply of nutrients.
