Marley's ChainWhen Jacob Marley appears in Scrooge's home, he's dragging a heavy chain made of "cashboxes, keys, padlocks, ledgers, deeds, and heavy purses wrought in steel." These items clearly suggest that the heavy chain was created by and signifies Marley's greed.
Clearly, Scrooge finds Marley's ghost, the spirit of his old partner, the most frightening because no other spirit disturbs to the extent that this one does.
Belle was his fiance. She broke off their engagement because he had replaced love of her with love of money. “What Idol has displaced you?” he rejoined. “A golden one.”
Why does Scrooge fear the third Spirit most of all? Because he shows him the death of Scrooge. Also, he is a very creepy looking. Tiny Tim unfortunately dies, and Bob Cratchit loses his job because Scrooge has died.
The figure, a majestic giant clad in green robes, sits atop a throne made of a gourmet feast. In a booming voice, the spirit announces himself as the Ghost of Christmas Present. He tells Scrooge that he has more than 1800 brothers and his lifespan is a mere single day.
Conceivably, his fear comes in the form of regret and remorse: knowing he has lost companions, a fiancé and a family. The third ghost takes Scrooge to see several people who would benefit from his death. At this point in the novella, it is clear that Scrooge's mannerisms change as he revaluates his priorities.
His invitation to 'know me better' is generous and open-hearted. When Scrooge asks whether Tiny Tim will live, the Ghost answers with the words Scrooge had previously spoken to the portly gentlemen who were collecting for charity. "If he be like to die, he had better do it, and decrease the surplus population."
Key language: Dickens's use of lightThe Ghost has a very strange 'bright clear jet of light' (p. 23) springing from its head which Scrooge can't bear; he actually asks the Ghost to put its hat on. Dickens uses Scrooge's response to the light to show us that he is uncomfortable in the presence of this being.
The Ghost of Christmas Present wears a fur-trimmed robe, a holly wreath on his head, and he claims to have more than eighteen hundred brothers. This spirit has another startling revelation: he has a lifespan of just twenty-four hours.
Throughout 'A Christmas Carol', Dickens presents Christmas as a unifying force within Victorian society, and he sets out a moral obligation for his readers to adhere to his vision. Indeed, throughout Stave 1, every voice we hear refers to Christmas positively and with reverence – with the exception of Scrooge.
