Note: You don't actually need a bottom on your sandbox, but without it, you risk the frame warping or pulling apart over time. A floor will add more support to the frame and help keep sand clean. Be sure, however, to select a pressure-treated wood to guard against damp, warping, and rot over time.
Cinnamon is a natural bug repellent that's safe to use around kids. Sprinkle a whole lot of cinnamon into the sand and mix it very well. Repeat this process on a regular basis to keep most bugs from getting in the sandbox.
If you're not afraid of these, no need to be afraid of clean, wet play sand. Sand for sure can grow mold (even in bags). If sand gets wet, it can harbor bacteria. Make sure to let the sand dry out thoroughly before covering it for the night.
Boil a large pot full of water. Pour the boiling water on the sand and stir until all the sand gets fully submerged in boiling water. Let the sand stand for five minutes. Bake the sand in the oven at 180 degrees Fahrenheit for 1/2 hour to remove any remaining water and complete the sterilizing process.
Quikrete and other brands marketed as play sand contain not only crystalline silica but traces of the mineral tremolite, a form of asbestos. A tear-off information sheet near the displays notes the sand is "washed, screened and dried." A fact sheet from Quikrete calls the sand "a perfectly safe product."
Over the years we have been asked the question “What is the difference between play sand and builders sand?” The simple answer to this is that play sand is a less coarse, much finer version of builders sand that has been through certain processes to make sure it is safe for children to play with.

Sand for sure can grow mold (even in bags). I've had bags of sand sitting for 8 months (for a paver project that has yet to be started) and there is definitely visible large mold spots growing in the bags. I will just spray it with bleach water when I put it down.
You don't want things growing in the sandbox, or mud and water to puddle. Some people like having transportable sand boxes made out of barrels, boats, or plastic tubs. Before you fill the space with play sand, put a tarp on the bottom. Avoid plastic tarps that will prevent drainage.
It might take 1-3 days to dry out the sand but the UV rays will kill 99.9% of everything you might have in your 'swamp'. Hope this helps!
They can also be dangerous. A 2008 study on germs found that sandboxes harbored nearly 2,000 times more bacteria, yeast, and mold per square inch than the door handles of public restrooms.
What should I use for a sandbox bottom?
- Landscape fabric: allows water to drain through, but may not be strong enough to move.
- Regular plywood: allows movement, but may rot and does not drain.
- Redwood plywood: I don't know anything about, but I saw it at Home Depot, and it may be more resistant to rot.
Pour undiluted vinegar directly onto the sand around the perimeter of the sandbox. Sprinkle it liberally over all of the sand in the box. Repeat the application monthly. This will discourage neighborhood cats from using the sandbox as their own personal toilets.
Sandboxes should be covered during the winter months.
- Remove any objects that remain in the sandbox and clean them off before storing them in an attic, basement or garage for the winter.
- Remove any branches, leaves or debris from the sandbox before you cover it up.
The water hose is something we don't often think of when playing in the sand. That handy lid that comes on the sandbox does such a great job of keeping out moisture that it seems counter-intuitive to add water. Two small bottles of the powdered stuff mixed well into the sand, and we really have been bug free.
There are several types of fleas that live and breed in a sandbox. They are named for the type of animal, or host, they live on. Common species include the cat flea, hen flea, rat flea and human flea.
Kinetic Sand does not dry out; it's probably just the humidity affecting it. Simply add a couple of drops of water with an eyedropper and it will return to its original state.
If kinetic sand gets wet, it tends to stick to other surfaces. If yours has become wet, spread it out evenly on a surface, and let it air dry. It will completely dry within a few hours, and return back to its original texture.
Some alternatives materials have already been used as a replacement of natural sand such as fly-ash, quarry dust or limestone and siliceous stone powder, filtered sand, copper slag are used in concrete and mortar mixtures as a partial or full replacement of natural sand (Chandana Sukesh et al 2013)[9].

Artificial sand, also called crushed sand or mechanical sand (m sand), refers to rocks, mine tailings or industrial waste granules with a particle size of less than 4.75 mm. It is processed by mechanical crushing and sieving. In China, the artificial sand was mainly used in the construction of hydropower systems.
Most play sands (whether sold in home improvement, online, and big box stores) have crystalline silica in them because they contain quartz sand grains (which is the common name for crystalline silica).
- Shovel sand into a large sealed storage container or old garbage can.
- Add sand to your compost pile.
- Mix sand with pea gravel and place in the base of plants that you would like to pot and take inside for the winter.
- Rent a trailer or truck and load it with your sandbox sand.
Most of the risk in toxic sandbox sand comes from dust kicked up during play. You can reduce the amount of dust by wetting the sandbox sand before your kids play. You should also be careful when covering damp sand because mold can colonize the sandbox if left for too long.
